Every year on August 31, communities around the world come together to observe International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD)—the world’s largest campaign to end overdose, remember those who have died, and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind.
At Caring Workplaces, we believe that no one should have to face the pain of overdose or substance use disorder alone. IOAD is a time not only for remembrance but also for action. It reminds us of the urgent need to foster compassionate, stigma-free environments—especially in the workplace—where individuals can find support, recovery resources, and second chances.

Why International Overdose Awareness Day Matters
Overdose affects everyone. It's not just a public health issue, it’s a workforce issue, a family issue, and a community issue.
Stigma kills. Fear of judgment keeps people from seeking help. By raising awareness and sharing stories, we help break down barriers.
Recovery is possible. With the right support systems, including employment opportunities and an understanding workplace, people can and do recover.
How Employers Can Make a Difference
Promote a Recovery-Ready Culture. Provide training and education to reduce stigma and increase understanding of substance use disorders.
Support Second-Chance Hiring. Giving someone a job can be a life-saving opportunity.
Offer Compassionate Policies. Ensure employees have access to mental health and recovery resources without fear of punishment or termination.
Recognize and Remember. A moment of silence, a shared story, or a visual tribute at your workplace can go a long way in showing solidarity.
